EXCITING NEWS
Maree Edwards - our local member for Bendigo West - called me on Monday with the very exciting news that Winters Flat would receive $2.9 million in this May state budget. This means we can continue to improve our buildings and facilities.
We are very grateful for the efforts of Maree, Katie Wilson and members of our school community past and present who lobbied so strongly for this funding.
The nature of the project will be officially announced following discussions with the Department of Education and Training.

ELECTION DAY
The cake stall and barbecue was a great success and even though the number of voters was down we still made $977.00.
A very special thanks to parents, staff and members of school council who baked for the stall and helped with cooking and serving.
We would also like to acknowledge the generous donation of:
• Bacon and sausages from Don
• Eggs from Bruce Pauly from Bruce’s Kitchen as well as the Honest Egg Co, Daylesford
• Bread from Bakers Delight, Castlemaine
The money raised will go towards additional blinds in the new building.

SUMMARY OF MEETING
School Council Meeting held on Monday May 20th 2019`
Our third School Council meeting for 2019 was held on Monday May 20th. We started the meeting by reflecting on what has worked well since our last meeting, including the Mother’s Day Stall, Election Day BBQ, the Grade 2 camp to Boomerang Ranch and the Bendigo Cross Country.
We also heard about the fantastic work that Rosie Annear is doing with the Grade 5 and 6 students on the Mini Media project.
Teachers have been participating in literacy and numeracy training in collaboration with other local schools. A team of staff are now fully trained in the Berry Street Education Model.
We are excited to be hosting the Winters Flat Trivia Night on Saturday 15th June 2019. Please support this not to be missed fundraising event; tickets are available at the school office.
The next school council meeting is scheduled for Monday 17th June 2019 at 7pm.

THIS WEEK IN THE KITCHEN & GARDEN...
What we're cooking in the kitchen this week...
With Jane in Italy, the kitchen was under the creative control of chef (and parent) Jason Newton, and Kay Tomlinson.
Inspired by Jane's Italian adventure, the recipes took on a little Mediterranean flavour...
Salad of the Imagination
Pumpkin Damper
Quince Muffins (a variation of the Apple and Cinnamon Muffins recipe - but using quince!)
Home made Ricotta
Tomato, Olive, Broccoli and Ricotta Pasta
.
Remember, all our recipes are available on our school website, so you can try them at home.
.
And what we're harvesting from the garden...
Kale
Rainbow Chard
Rosemary
Lettuce
Fennel frongs

HELP US BUILD AN INSECT HOTEL
As the weather starts to turn, the kids at our school are keen to make an insect hotel, so all our creeping, crawling and flying little friends have somewhere to get out of the cold.
But they need help...
We're looking for someone in our school community that could build a wooden frame for the kids to fill with all the right insecty parts.
Insect hotels come in all shapes and sizes, so the design options are unlimited (the ones below are just a few examples!). If you think you can help the kids with this project, please send us an email, or see Karen in the office.

FARMERS MARKETS GOURMET BBQ - Thank you!
Thanks to everyone who worked on Winters Flat’s Gourmet BBQ at the Castlemaine Farmers Market on Sunday 5 May and to all the families and teachers who came and bought something on the day!
We took in $1,740, sold one sausage or mushroom roll a minute, fed lots of hungry people with delicious, locally produced food, had fun and raised $650.00 for our whole-of-school term 3 project with local artist, Eliza Jane Gilchrist, called The more you look, the more you see.
Thank you to Jason Newton – chef extraordinaire for the menu, logistics planning and for the cooking demonstration with daughter Georgie.
Thank you to the amazing RedBeard Historic Bakery for donating all of the breadrolls for our BBQ. Please support RedBeard by buying their bread – only available at the Castlemaine Farmers Market or visit their Bakery in Trentham. Thanks to Bruce’s Kitchen for the donation of relish.
Thank you to the team of volunteers who made this all possible:
Dale Husted, Elissa Sadgrove, Sarah Day, Sharyn Robinson, Rani Kerin, Maeve Kerin, David Tobin, Catrina Weiss, Shera Blaise, Rhani Dean-Talbot, Peter Gringel, Peter Gringel, Nicole and Fergus and Emma Brown.
Thanks also to Blair Venn, Natasha and Amber, Lucinda Kaptein Gringel, Georgie and Anugus Newton, Juliet, our art teacher, and the students for designing the menu board.
And a huge thank you to Helen Kaptein, for tirelessly pulling the whole event - and the people - together!

ELECTION DAY BBQ - Thank you
Thank you to all the families and staff who supported the Winters Flat BBQ on Election Day. We had a great supply of delicious cakes, slices, biscuits, and cup cakes.
Thank you to Don KR Castlemaine for donating sausages and bacon, Honest Eggs Co and Bruce Pauly for the eggs, and Bakers Delight for the bread.
We were also very grateful for those who gave up time to help on the day: Blair V, Liza S, Keseyna W, Esther H-H, Rohan, Kirsty W, and Bianca.
We raised a total of $977. Part of this money will be put towards supporting the Art Project and the rest for supplies for the new building.

Grandparents’ & Special Friends’ Afternoon
Prep & Grade 1 Children - Friday 14th June, 2019
Grandparents’ & Special Friends’ Afternoon is a special occasion where students in Grade Prep and One show their guests around their classroom and then share a short performance with their Grandparents/Special Friends.
This week we are sending home an invitation with children in Grades P/1 for their grandparents or special friends to attend our special afternoon from 2.15pm to 3.15pm.
To assist preparations for this day we need to know numbers and the names of visitors attending. Please let your child’s teacher know if your child is unable to have a visitor, so arrangements can be made to ‘share’ visitors. If extra invitations are desired, please let us know.
To enable a special afternoon tea for the children and their visitors, could parents please bring a plate of food to share on the day.
If you could complete the following information slips and return them to the appropriate classroom teacher by Wednesday 12th June, this would assist greatly with our organising.
Many Thanks
