BOOK WEEK OPEN MORNING TOMORROW

To celebrate Book Week tomorrow at 9.15am we’ll have a grand parade in Oakview of students (and parents/carers/staff) who have dressed up as a book character.

We then invite parents and carers to join in the discussion in their child’s classroom, or read from the book they have selected from their own childhood.

For me the book I would choose is The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by C S Lewis. An early memory is having this story read aloud to my sister and me by our grandfather, when we visited my grandparents each weekend. We would listen to a chapter at a time and I can still hear his voice and distinctive Lincolnshire lilt, as he pronounced the names of the characters.

2020 VISION AND THE SCHOOL REVIEW – PARENT FORUMS

Thank you to the parents who came to the forums last week.

The broad area for discussion were:

• Students’ academic experiences
• Students’ social and emotional experiences
• Students’ experiences of the school environment
• School community experiences

We are now collating the response to the questions posed:

What would you like to see more of?

What would you like to see less of?

Are there things we could be doing that we currently don’t do?

What needs to change?

A survey to all Winters Flat families will be available soon.

Central to this process is finding out what our students think and they will be invited to participate in this feedback process.

REGIONAL PARENT FORUMS

Attached to this Newsletter is an invitation to participate in a forum at Bendigo 9.30am-3.30pm next Tuesday 27^th August to connect with other parents and carers to discuss:

FOOTBALL TRIP – MCG

I was very proud of the behaviour of all the students from Year 5 and Year 6 who attended the Richmond v Carlton game last Sunday. I was less impressed by the result but I was definitely in the minority as we sat at the Punt Road end.

I would particularly like to thank Katie Wilson who organized the tickets and the train/bus to get there and back, as well Peter Wilson, Phoebe and Phoebe, Keenan Lucas and Sam Milner who assisted with support and supervision.

WINTER WORKING BEE

Sunday was spent clearing away some old fruit trees and signage at the front of the school and the area has been planted with some new native shrubs and grasses. Thanks to Kate Brebner and Stephen Beavis, Terry Willis, Blair Venn, Kirsty Williams & Simon Butler, Helen Kaptein and Lucinda, Luca, Leuca, Jimmy and Sam. Great effort!

UNIFORM SHOP- BELEZA

The uniform shop will be temporarily unavailable until further notice.  There are plans for the company to open a shop in Castlemaine stocking all the uniforms in the area. In the meantime you can order uniforms from the office as we have a small selection of styles and sizes for viewing.  Tuesday will be the day to order and then Thursday the order will be delivered.  You can also use your vouchers from State School Relief.  Free postage for online orders until further notice using code FREEPOSTCASTLEMAINE. There is also going to be a slight price rise from the 1^st September 2019.  New price lists will be distributed shortly.

HATS

Just a reminder that it is compulsory for students to start wearing their hats from the 1st September. Hats must be wide brimmed. If you need to purchase one, they are available at the office for $14.00. If a child is without a hat, they must play in a shaded area.

LOST PROPERTY

We have an assortment of lost property (containers, water bottles, beanies) currently at the office. Please remember to label all items to ensure items are promptly returned.

TOMATO FUNDRAISER

Help us to raise funds for Winters Flat Primary School by germinating tomato seeds into seedlings. We plan to sell the tomato plants at fundraising events in November/December.

We need 12 families to take home a germinating kit. Your job will be:

1. plant the tomato seeds
2. care for the seedlings
3. repot 25 seedlings into tube stock pots
4. drop them back at school ready for sale.

Kits need to be collected on Sept 2nd, Term 3 and returned by Nov 11th, Term 4.

You’ll be given seeds/pots/tray/seed raising mix/clear instructions. We ask if you can please provide the potting mix/soil.

If you are interested in helping us by raising some tomatoes, please leave your name, email and phone number at the office.

MELBOURNE ZOO EXCURSION

Forms have been distributed for the whole school Melbourne Zoo excursion on Tuesday 3rd September. Please return the permission form with payment to the office ASAP. Zoo memberships are unfortunately unable to be used due to the education part of the zoo being different from the membership part.

SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON MONDAY AUGUST 19^TH 2019: SUMMARY OF MEETING

Our last School Council meeting was held on Monday August 19^th 2019.  We started the meeting by reflecting on what has worked well since our last meeting, including the tree planting day, the recent parent forums, the senior student’s assembly on Monday 19^th August, and the two football excursions. Students from Grades 4, 5, and 6 students had a great time watching the Richmond players train while another group enjoyed a very informative tour of the MCG Sports Museum. This was followed up with another trip to the MCG to watch Richmond versus Carlton.  We are busily preparing for the upcoming School Review, and would welcome your support at this very busy time. Thank you to those parents/carers who attended the forums last week. We gathered some very useful feedback about what the school is doing well and areas for further improvement. This data will be used as part of the review. In the meantime, we are working on ensuring that there are clear communication channels between home and school. One of our key methods of communication is Flat Chat. More hard copies of this newsletter will be available as well as the usual online access via the SZapp. We are looking forward to the upcoming Father’s Day stall on Thursday 29^th August 2019 (before school only) and Friday 30^th August 2019 (lunchtime only). We are also in the planning stage for the end of year Twilight Market on 6^th December 2019. Your support with these events is much appreciated.

The next school council meeting is scheduled for Monday 16th September 2019 at 7pm.

THE MORE YOU LOOK THE MORE THERE IS TO SEE

 In the past couple of weeks we have continued to look at natural patterns and create impressions of these through sketching and ink work.  We have moved across into the room next to the music, to create our studio, which will also house our exhibition at the project’s completion.  Students have been making increasingly diverse shapes – including cylinders of varied scale and proportions.  Students who volunteered for the expert group have also had the chance to make large seedpod type shapes, onion domes and spheres out of multiple pattern pieces.  The garden continues to grow!

ENDANGERED SPECIES COMPETITION

In Grade 2/3 students have been busily working on art pieces promoting the challenges faced by particular endangered animal species.  This was inspired by a competition run by The Humane Society.  As not all the students were able to complete both their art piece and the written component in time for the competition, we decided that we would have a small WFPS competition along the same lines. 

Teachers helped to select our award recipients based on a couple categories.

The original brief was that the work needed to show an endangered animal and tell a story, with images, of how their particular animal’s survival is threatened. 

The following students were selected for their composition and then through the creative ways they responded to the design brief:

Frankie, Sylvie, Abi P, Joe, Georgie, Saffron, Levi J, Iris and Faith.  

The second category is in recognition of particular techniques and expression within the art piece. These students are:

Sascha, Detroit, Makinti and Sullivan. 

It was a tough decision and all students are congratulated for their efforts!

SPECIAL ASSEMBLY

To celebrate Science Week and the 50th Anniversary of the Moon landing, the Senior Learning Community put on a special performance that was enjoyed by all. The students researched and presented facts about the momentous occassion, before performing the song 'Purple People Eater'. Thank you to all those who came along and watched.

YOUNG MAKERS MARKET

Registrations for the next Young Makers Market are now open!

Young creatives aged 12-25 yrs are encouraged to get in touch about having a free stall at the next Young Makers Market- Father's Day special at the Theatre Royal.

The Young Makers Market is an opportunity for young people to sell their homemade wares such as crafts, candles, horticulture, clothing, photography etc. in a safe and supportive environment.

Space hire is free and easy.
