- COMMUNITY EVENTS
Dear Winters Flat Community
As this last term begins and I look at our calendar of events here at school I’m tempted to say “Hold on to your hats!” Coming up this term is Prep and Year 6 Transition, the swimming program (Years 1-6), Bike Ed (Years 3/4) and Year 6 Graduation to name a few. We also have the major fund raising events in November and our end of year community celebration in December.
Our proposed school Xmas event clashes with the Castlemaine Twilight Artists Market on 14th December. At this stage we are looking for alternatives and we will let you know the new date as soon as we can.
Major Fund-raising Events this Term-Can you Help?
Our first big weekend event is the Paul Bangay Open Garden. We need volunteers to work at the WFPS Stall for four hours on Saturday 17th November or Sunday 18th November 10am-2pm, 2pm - 6pm.
We are also looking for donations of home-made preserves (old family recipes are great - clearly labelled with all ingredients), as well as baked items listed below, for the stall. We are hoping to make strawberry jam in the kitchen at school on Monday 5th November.
For the jam we will need donations of strawberries, lemons and sugar, and butter for the baked items. The recipes are Buttery Lemon Thyme & Vanilla Boomerangs and Parmesan Sables, on our website as well as an online sign-on for volunteering that weekend.
The second event is the State Election, on Saturday 24th November. Winters Flat PS is a polling booth and on that day we hope to have barbecues selling bacon and egg rolls with a vegetarian option, as well as a cake stall. We will be seeking volunteers from our school community to make cakes for the cake stall, sell cakes and assist with the barbecue that day from 8.00am – 2.00pm.
Premiers’ Reading Challenge
Congratulations to all the students who took part in this year’s challenge. They should receive their certificates this week. We had a fantastic participation rate and I thank Helen Weir for coordinating this event as well as the teachers, parents and carers who supported their children.
Circular Rhythm
The whole school were astounded by the performance of Lucas Proudfoot in Circular Rhythm on Monday. His presentation and performance left the audience wanting more!
Prep Enrolments for 2019 - Urgent
We are asking families with a Prep-age child for next year to submit their enrolment details as soon as possible! All Castlemaine schools are hoping to have their 2019 enrolment numbers confirmed in coming weeks, with transition programs commencing in November.

Come Along and Sing after school at Creekview today!!!
Parents come and sing songs together with the kids and learn some vocal techniques in a fun and relaxed session run by Peter Flatz (parent and vocal coach) 3.30pm – 4.30pm today.

The final chess event is Friday 26th October at Marcellin College, Bulleen. We wish the chess teams all the best!
Holiday Gardening
The garden group who have been working hard to get the gardens looking so good were back during the holidays, with the results looking absolutely fantastic around the front entrance and art room. Special thanks to Melissa and Kate.
NEWS | Circular Rhythm Performance
On Monday we had a performing artist visit the school.
Circular Rhythm is a solo performance featuring guitar, stomp box and didgeridoo plus other indigenous instruments including clap sticks and boomerangs. The format is interactive with audience participation a key component. The songs performed in the show are all original compositions by awarded songwriter, Lucas Proudfoot.
Students and staff all had a great time joining in the activities.
PUBLIC HOLIDAY - 6th November - Melbourne Cup
Coles Vouchers
The school purchased 2 Portable Netball Goals and some Shotputs with the vouchers that were collected during the Coles vouchers promotion earlier in the year.
A HUGE thank you to veryone who supported this initiative, which enabled us to replenish our sporting equipment.
Lunch Orders
There will be no lunch orders on Friday the 9th November, 2018.

The Mt Alexander Council is offering free green waste disposal from 20th October to the 4th November, 2018.
World Teachers Day Friday 31st October 2018
This is an important day to recognise and acknowledge teachers across primary and secondary schools. On behalf of the Winters Flat School Council, I would like to extend a special thank you to all our teachers for the great work that they do inside, and outside the classroom. They work tirelessly to help ensure that our children come to a school that provides a nurturing, inclusive and dynamic approach to learning and development. They make a consistent effort to get to know all students in the school, and to make everyone feel welcome. It is not just the big things that teachers do like teaching the curriculum, going on school camps, and helping out at fundraising events but all the small things too like saying hello every morning, cutting up an apple at recess, and joining in with a game. All these things are what help to build our strong school community, and we are very fortunate to have such a committed group of teachers.

NEWS | From The Listening Post
I have recently moved my room into Creekview, so do encourage your child/ren to pop in and say hello. Tuesday morning drop-in is running again this term from 8.30 – 9.30 am, so if you have any areas of concern or any questions around supporting your child’s social and emotional development, please do drop in and gain mutual support from other parents.
WFPS was successful in securing some funding from The Maldon Community Bank’s Building Children’s Resilience grant. The grant is for a pilot project in providing Reflective Practice to early-years teachers (pre-school through to grade one) and middle years teachers (grade five through to year seven) in the region. We thank the Maldon Bank for their support of the teachers of the Mount Alexander Shire.
Katie Wilson, School Council President, is currently seeking out a guest speaker for an upcoming community forum – watch this space for more details! This forum is the initiative of the Well-being team, and the ideas for the forum have come from conversations with parents about their current needs in raising children in an increasingly complex society.
Over the next term, all of our staff will be having discussions on how best to implement a whole of school approach to Respectful Relationships, a government program. We will reflect on what we are doing well and areas we need to focus on in supporting whole of school respectful relationships. Eight of our staff will also start training in the Berry Street Education Model. Both of these whole of school well-being programs will be integrated into the whole school culture over the next two years.
Cheers,
Kim, Student Well-being

Our school has signed up to participate in Walk to School Month in October.
We’d love to see families put their best foot forward and join thousands of other Victorian kids walk, ride or scoot to school.
Part way is ok! If you can’t walk the whole way, why not try parking the car a few blocks from school and walk, ride or scoot the rest.
Walk to School helps get kids active, and gives you a chance to talk and teach road safety skills while spending quality time together and getting active yourself.
Walk to School is a VicHealth initiative and Mount Alexander Shire Council is on board to help our school make the most of the program.

This is the only community choir for children and young people in Castlemaine.
